Soccer: Athletic advance in KO Cup
Killarney Athletic 4 Mastergeeha 2
KILLARNEY Athletic over-came Mastergeeha at the second time of asking winning 4-2 in Killarney Athletic Park, in a second round replay in the Greyhound Bar KO Cup.
After a scoreless draw in the opening encounter, this game produced six goals and as many misses with four goals coming in the second half.
Mastergeeha started with the aid of the wind in the first half and forces a number of early corners that were well dispatched into the danger area by Anthony O’ Sullivan but Athletic managed to clear the threat.
The first big call of the game came at the other end on 20 minutes when Cian Tobin appeared to be taken down in the box but the referee waved the play on.
Tobin continued to be a threat down the right for the home side while brothers Timmy and Edward O’Sullivan impressed for Athletic throughout in the midfield.
However, it was the away side who took the first blood when Ricky Fleming eventually forced the ball over the line from close range following a long throw into the box and giving his side an unlikely lead.
Athletic had to work hard to get back into the game and wasted some good opportunities before Martin Crowley equalised on 35 minutes after reacting quickest to the rebound off the ‘keeper from a Galen Carroll strike.
The home side started the second half the better forcing their opponents to defend with Tobin moving up front with Crowley as Adam Moynihan made a welcome return to the Athletic fold.
The game took a new lease of life on 60 minutes when Crowley again broke free from his marker and scored his second of the day.
But this lead was not to last for long as Mastergeeha came down the pitch and won a free kick outside the right hand corner of the box.
Up came right back, Mike Murphy, to lose his marker and head O’Sullivan’s free kick out of Quill’s reach and into the far corner of the net.
Stung by this equaliser, Athletic upped the pace with Ed O’Sullivan impressing and Crowley causing mayhem up front.
It was no surprise when he was the one to put Athletic back in front on 70 minutes after a sweeping up field move.
The drama was not to end there as Mastergeeha sensing a frailty in the Athletic rear guard pushed men forward in typical cup tie fashion with Bruton and Kerins winning more of the ball in the middle of the park as Athletic tired.
Quill had to be alert on a number of occasions to prevent a second equaliser and then on 77 minutes his side were awarded a penalty for a hand ball offence in the box but Kieran Fleming was equal to Carroll’s spot kick effort.
Unfortunately for the ‘keeper though the rebound fell to Ed O’Sullivan whose goal-ward strike deflected off a covering defender on the line and ended up in the back of the net.
Much to the credit of Mastergeeha they never gave up and were handed a lifeline on 82 minutes when they were awarded a penalty themselves, but Quill saved from Alan Moynihan and Athletic scrambled the ball away to safety.
It was not to be their day when a Mike Murphy header glanced of the cross bar and over with Quill beaten on this occasion.
Crowley had further chances at the other end to extend the lead while Alex O’Sullivan also caused difficulty for the Mastergeeha rearguard when introduced.
Fleming saved well at the death to keep the score line at 4-2 but it was Athletic that advanced to the next round tie away to the Dynamos.
