Kilbrean Park was the venue for the U16 girls Kerry Cup Competition on Saturday. In the semi - final the home team played a good Killarney Celtic side and recorded a narrow victory of 1-0 thanks to a well – taken goal from Marie Sheehan. In the final the Mastergeeha girls faced last year winners Ballyhar. In the opening half with the breeze behind them the girls had all the play and created a number of chances through good play from Miriam Healy and Aine Riordan. Marie Sheehan also went close but the girls could not get the lead goal. In the second half the home team were forced to defend as Ballyhar put pressure on their goal. However in the 15th minute Ballyhar won a free kick on the edge of the box, which the attacking side scored with a well taken shot. Mastergeeha now upped the pace but were finding it difficult to create good scoring chance against a strong Ballyhar side. In the closing minutes in their final attack Emer Casey cleared well to Miriam Healy who passed a through ball to Tracy Coffey who finished well to the net to leave the full time score 1-1. In the first half of extra time the girls had all the play and Orla Burton went close to scoring only to see her shot saved by Ballyhar goalkeeper. In the final quarter the home side again went close hitting the upright with a shot from Marie Sheehan. With no winner after extra time the dreaded penalty shoot out was called upon to decide the destination of the Cup. However things did not look good after three penalties with Ballyhar 2-0 up. Then Aoife Doyle scored and Anne O’Keeffe saved well to give the girls a chance. Up stepped Miriam Healy who finished her penalty to the top corner and Ann O’Keeffe again saved well (score 2-2). Into sudden death in the penalties Ciara Nagle came forward and scored with an unstoppable shot. In the final penalty Mastergeeha goalkeeper Ann O’Keeffe held her nerve to save well to give Mastergeeha the cup to the delight of the team and all supporters. A delighted Captain Marie Sheehan accepted the Cup from Maurice Guilfoyle. Mastergeeha had many heroes on the day but this victory based on teamwork, effort and spirit of the whole team.
