Soccer: Mastergeeha’s promotion hopes ended

Denny Premier 1B

MASTERGEEHA 1 LISTOWEL CELTIC 4

MASTERGEEHA lost out on their chance of being involved in a promotion play-off after they lost a crunch game at home to Listowel Celtic B at Kilbrean Park on Sunday morning. This was a crunch game for both sides who are fighting it out for the second promotion spot in Division 1B. Celtic began well and had they availed of their early goal-scoring opportunities they could have been well out of sight by half time. However they squandered no less that six good scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes with Daniel Lane, Kieran O’Mahony, and Chris Lyons being the chief culprits. It took the home side 14 minutes to get their first shot on target when Tommy Cooper set up Dave Fleming and his shot was easily saved by Celtic ‘keeper, Jimmy Clancy. The Mastergeeha strikers had to live out of crumbs as they were losing the midfield battle with Celtic completely dictating matters. Despite enjoying the loin’s share of possession Celtic just could not get the breakthrough and they were almost caught on the hop just before half time when a good through ball by Chris Egan found John Herlihy on the verge of the box and his first time shot grazed the right hand post. The sides went in scoreless at half time but Celtic were clearly the better side. The home side got back into the game in the second half without ever really threatening to score. Most of their play went through Kevin Bruton who was the best player on the park on the day and it’s a pity that he had to finish on the losing side. Then totally against the run of play the home side took a dramatic lead from a corner kick in the 65th minute. The corner kick was well dispatched by Aidan Kerins in the box where Celtic goalie Jimmy Clancy caught and lost the ball and appeared to be fouled. However, the referee waved play on and in a crowded goal-mouth Kevin Bruton pounced and headed it to the net. However Celtic responded well to this setback and in the space of 10 minutes ended the game as a contest with three well-taken goals. The first was a well worked move with Pa Walsh finding Daniel Lane down the right wing and after leaving a few defenders in his wake he put Chris Lyons through and he mad no mistake from close range. Two minutes later they had doubled their lead when a fine move involving Martin Loughnane and Daniel Lane and he went down the right wing putting Kieran O Mahony through and he drew the goalkeeper before slotting the ball to the net. Shortly after the kick off the Mastergeeha defense were again breached when an accurate throw from Martin Loughnane found Chris Lyons and be ran at the home defense before squeezing the ball to the net from an acute angle. Just before the final whistle Celtic found the net again when Daniel Lane picked up a clearance in his own half and ran the length of the pitch rounded the keeper and tapped the ball into the empty net for a great individual goal. Mastergeeha: K Fleming, T Cooper, A Kerins, P Lenihan, C Lenihan, A Moynihan, J Devane, C Egan, D Fleming, K Bruton, J Herlihy. Subs used: A Breen, R O’Sullivan, T Brosnan, A O’Sullivan. Tralee Celtic’s winning streak continues

Celsius Menswear Challenge Cup

Tralee Celtic 2 Mastergeeha 1

TRALEE Celtic are in a rich vein of form at the moment as they eased their way into the next round of the Celsius Cup with a fine win over Mastergeeha at Mounthawk Park on Friday night. The Tralee side were the better side all through and carried too much know how as they never allowed their opponents to settle on the ball. After a sustained period of Tralee Celtic attacks they took the lead in the 17th minute from the penalty spot. The move began at midfield by Brian O’Donovan who set Adam Moore through and his great true ball found Fergal Moynihan bearing in on goals just as he was about to shoot he was taken down inside the box and referee Seamus O’Mahony awarded a penalty. Fergal Moynihan duly converted from the penalty spot as the teams leading scorer should and this had Mastergeaha on the back foot from very early on. Any hope of a comeback by Mastergeeha were dashed after the start of the second half when Tralee Celtic scored again. Fiachra Dunne picked up the ball just outside his own box and left a trail of midfielders and defenders in his wake and tucked the ball to the net from close range. Now, Mastergeeha were enjoying much more possession but were badly lacking the necessary firepower up front. They forced several corners but never posed a serious threat of breaching the Tralee Celtic defense. However, they did manage what was a consolation goal at the end of the game when a Kevin Bruton corner hit the angle of the post and crossbar and sub Alan Breen was quickest to react and drill the ball to the net. It was a very good all round performance by Tralee Celtic who are developing into a very good side that should hold their own in the Premier Division next season. Full marks to Mastergeeha for never giving up right up to the final whistle and they had outstanding performers in Kieran Fleming and Paul Lenihan at the back, Kevin Bruton and John Devane at midfield while Anthony O Sullivan was a constant threat up front. They are still in contention for promotion in Division 1 and are slight favourites to be involved in the play off for promotion.

Killarney Celtic 2 Mastergeeha 1

Article by the Kingdom

KILLARNEY Celtic gained a crucial victory over local rivals Mastergeeha in this derby clash played at Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon. It was a game played in dreadful weather conditions with strong winds and heavy rains blowing down the pitch for the entire first half and was a credit to both sides that they played some good attacking football. Mastergeeha, who are sitting pretty in the promotion zone having been relegated last season, met a stronger than usual Killarney Celtic outfit because of the involvement of two of their senior players in that Oscar Traynor Cup game with Kerry. This enabled Alan Nagle and Conor Spellman to drop down to the B squad and they more than justified their inclusion with sterling displays against a very determined Mastergeeha outfit. Mastergeeha were solid at the back where Tommy Cooper and Colm Lenihan were outstanding at the heart of the defence but overall their inability to take their chances in front of goal cost them. The first half saw Mastergeeha with the wind and rain at their backs but they created precious few chances in the opening quarter. Celtic had a chance as early as the sixth minute but Shane Dennehy shot well wide of the target. Mastergeeha responded in the 16th minute when Alan Moynihan was fouled on the edge of the box and John Devane’s dipping free kick was turned behind by a flying James Hurley. The opening goal came in the 24th minute and it was Alan Moynihan who took a free kick wide on the right, and when the ball reached the back post the ball was headed down by Colm Lenihan in to the path of John Herlihy who scored from two yards. Celtic defended well against the elements with Cathal Bartlett and Alan Nagle strong at the heart of the Celtic back four. But they created precious little at the other end of the pitch though Conor Spellman was unlucky to see a header strike his brother and come back into the goalkeeper’s grasp. Mastergeeha retired 1-0 in front at the interval but Celtic probably felt confident enough of getting something from the game as they had the elements to their backs for the second period. In the 50th minute Celtic almost scored but Shane Dennehy’s shot was saved by Fleming but at the other end Mastergeeha could have doubled their lead when the cat like Hurley made a fine save from Sean Doherty. Celtic levelled in the 61st minute when a free kick from Shane Dennehy was knocked away to the edge of the box and Sean McCarthy was on hand to send a low right-footed drive to the corner of the net. It was now everything to play for as Celtic went in search of the winner and in the 67th minute a cross found Joe Joe Fleming who beat the keeper but Conor Spellman just failed to make contact at the far post. In the 73rd minute Alan Nagle forced the keeper to make a good save from a well-struck shot from the edge of the box. It was now anybody’s game but in the 76th minute Celtic struck for the winning goal when Shane Dennehy raced down the left wing. His cross-some-shot appeared to have the keeper beaten but substitute Dan O’Sullivan raced in and finished to the net from close range just to make sure. Mastergeeha had one final half chance in the 89th minute but Colm Lenihan turned a header from a corner behind. Overall Celtic will be happy with the three points, which they needed while Mastergeeha will be cursing their luck for meeting their neighbours on the day when they were particularly strong.
